Since a few days it is possible to buy the Newisys NA-1400 in Europe. Available for EUR 560 (including 19% FAT) in the Netherlands. A page with a list of resellers is maintained here.

I’ve received word from Newisys that the NA-1400 is in production! It should allready be available in the US and perhaps some other countries. Distributors (Avnet and Microtronics) in Europe will be receiving their first shipment somewhere next week.

A ‘small issue with the fan’ has delayed production.

Latest news indicate that production is scheduled for late December. So one should be able to buy this product near the 3rd week of January. Newisys is currently evaluating potential parters to take the NA-1400 in their portfolio.

Finally some detailed performance data has come available (in MB/s). This data has been produced by Newisys using a RAID 5 configuration and the IOMeter benchmark test:

RAID 5 test large block size small block size
Sequential Read 15 - 22 3 - 14
Sequential Write 5 - 9 1 - 8

RAID 5 will have a negative impact on performance vs. RAID 1 or RAID 0. Also the NA-1400 will perform better with more than one concurrent user. The performance for 2-20 users is relatively consistent. There is also no appreciable decline in performance up to the maximum projection of host connections (20).

Production of the Newisys NA-1400 is delayed until the end of November due to some minor problems. Next week I hope to be able to present some RAID-5 performance results as reported by the Newisys’ testlab!

In anticipation of the NA-1400 release, this website is going public.

The contact from the European distributor was able to tell me they’re nagotiating with major resellers for a short-term exclusive deal. With a bit of luck the NA-1400 will be shipping shortly.

A contact with a major European distributor told me they were able to testdrive a demo model (using three 500 GB Hitachi harddisks). The contact was very impressed by it’s features and performance but was not able to tell much, because much of the details are under NDA. Retail prices were estimated between 400 - 500 Euro excl. FAT for a barebone model without harddisks.

Another conversation with the sales representative. This time about the performance problems with the Thecus N4100, which is based on almost the same hardware. The representative stated Newisys is going to deliver best in class performance for the NA-1400. Lets hope the dual gigabit ethernet connectors aren’t purely for show...
